MANHATTAN BEACH (CBSLA.com) — For the first time in five years, lifeguards from across the country are in Manhattan Beach for the four-day National Lifeguard Championships.

Los Angeles County lifeguard Brian Murphy is among the hundreds of men and women who are competing against each other.

“We’re taking our day job and turning it into a lot of fun,” he said. “This competition actually makes us better at our jobs.”

The lifeguards, ranging from ages 9 to 75, will compete for individual and team honors in board racing, surf boat racing and various relays.

“It’s great to see everybody out here fit,” said Diane Graner-Gallas, a veteran of the competition who has been a lifeguard since 1982.

“The best part is that it’s on our home field. This is my home beach,” she added.

CBS2’s Stephanie Simmons reported that Los Angeles County has won 26 national championships in a row. blog comments powered by Disqus
